A brief moment of panic just happened. Got out of the car and thought I was going blind.
Apparently it’s just really muggy this morning and my sunglasses fogged completely over instantly.
That seems like a fun omen for the afternoon.

Heard some rumbling outside, it must be that time!
That looks promising! Yep, there’s Filbert hanging out on the tail there! You can also see the tiny American flag I bought for a dollar at home depot. Probably best to be patriotic in these parts, but really I bought it to make it look a bit more like our house was occupied and not potentially for sale still.
There’s our Filbert, hanging out on the tail there. Looks good so far, pretty dang dirty though so will need a good cleaning to be sure.
Sadly arrival was just 10 minutes too late to make it to the car spa. So Filbert gets cleaned tomorrow and then we’ll be extra certain there are no issues from transit.
The guy who drove the truck with Filbert onboard makes the trip twice a month, Portland to Dallas/Austin/Houston and then back home. Lots of miles on the road, but he really likes the company and has been doing it for 7 years. Nice to know the relo company found good companies for us, I have no complaints about that, so far, even if dealing with the relocation company itself is a bit laborious sometimes.
Grabbing some sushi for dinner.
Was not expecting to find soy sauce in this packaging. Very amused.
Back at home the refrigerator has completed it’s 24 Hour chill-down cycle. Tomorrow: grocery shopping?
No, we haven’t suddenly taken a trip to Disney for the Grim Grinning Ghosts, but we have our very own hautnig now, a Casper!
Inside the big stripey box is our new mattress! Exciting!
The little box is networking gear. Also exciting, but probably only to me. (and maybe Brian)
All our utilities are finally set up, so nothing will get disconnected on Friday, good news there. Going about contacting the ISP we’ll be using temporarily until Spectrum wins their battle with the Union Pacific railway and drags a fiber cable over to our development, probably in September.
They have these big radio towers here, lacking any sort of, you know, mountains….
Fortunately we have a great view of one from our backyard, so that’s where internet will come from for a few months.
Unfortunately the router got packed in the truck by accident rather than in my suitcase with the AP, so no internet until Saturday at least either way.
On to the next project!
“Tots” means something very different here than it does at our old local McMenamins.
We’ve got appliances!
Car arrives hopefully tomorrow or Thursday. Mattress is arriving tomorrow, and our moving van is now scheduled to arrive Saturday! (did they drive all the way from Portland in first gear? Hopefully that means everything is nice and safe. 😂)
Gonna be able to spend our first night here soon! So exciting!
(I’m about halfway done rewiring all the network/coax, should be done with that today, so we’ll be all set on the internet side by time things are here too! Home sweet Wi-Fi!)
My camera roll from the past couple weeks seems to have a bunch of things which I intended to post but never actually did. Photo dump incoming!
First, a few pictures from while I was out on walks back in PDX and the ships were arriving for Fleet Week.
And here’s a picture of the last night I took my riverside walk in Portland. I’ll miss those walks. Well, for part of the year anyway.
During all the various driving around we did in the last few weeks I couldn’t help but take some pictures of my favorite mountains.
Next up a series of pictures taken from airplane windows!
And finally, a few random leftovers:
Hope you’ve enjoyed the photos! Bev’s at her first official day at her new job today, and I’m on a mission to get all our utilities hooked up at the house, re-wire some networking cables. I wish we had a chair at the house, it’s hard to sit on the stairs with a laptop comfortably. Stuff arrives…. soon? Who knows.
My brain really really tried hard to understand how “push button to receive potato” worked, before I realized that no, we have a microwave, not a replicator.
Also, what kind of savage microwaves a potato?
Today was a bit of an exciting adventure. Step 1: Purchase washer/dryer and refrigerator. I was expecting that to be quite the terrible process, but it turned out to be pretty painless. Even my credit card wasn’t complaining as much as expected!
What was not painless was talking Bev out of buying the chaise she wants. AGAIN.
We finally settled on NOT buying the chaise, but only because of the idea that there might be other, better chaise’ to be found at other locations. So I guess I’m not off the hook that easy. It was commented upon in a texting thread thusly:
It is terrible! Egregiously huge. It is an affront.
It is a BED. Except it is permanently in recline. It’s a broken reclining bed. It is best used as a guest bed for guests you hate.
Matt Proehl
I believe him to be correct, I could not have said it better. And yet I live in fear that some nebulously better chaise awaits, lurking in my future like a jaguar creeping through the jungle canopy at midnight. This new state of fear will take some getting used to.
So, we left Nebraska (the furniture mart, not the state… Although I’m still not certain which is larger.) and I pull up the great gooleator, which presents me with this:
My brain vaporlocked at “Explore The Colory”. Was I teleported to Mars? Was it April 1st? Is google gaslighting me? I was legitimately confused. For the second time! This happened once before several weeks ago when we were here. Apparently I didn’t learn. Very weird to have an area named “The Colony”, at least according to my brain. Maybe it’s too busy coping with the idea of “chaise” still.
Anyway, once I recovered from that, we managed to locate the location for the lunching: Bread Zeppelin! Which is a salad bar. Because…. well, no idea why, but Bevin loves it.
Yeah, that’s a “salad”. The center is hollowed out and filled with salad anyway.
The “best” part is that they take the soft center they scooped out, and make it into croutons and bread pudding, which they then charge you extra for.
It feels like a protection racket. The bread mafia perhaps? I avoided any mob entanglements by having a simple salad bowl, which was actually quite tasty. Would definitely take another ride on this Zeppelin.
In the afternoon we did a bit more shopping, moved some stuff from the hotel to the house, and took a few more measurements. You know, to figure out where to fit The Chaise.
Deliveries begin arriving Tuesday. We are not long for this hotel it seems. It’s hard to tell if we’re over-excited and can’t process the excitement any longer, or if it hasn’t really sunk in yet.
We are now officially in the future!
In the background, you’ll see a futon with a built-in motorized pillow. In the foreground, you’ll see a futon with built-in USB charger, aux input, and volume knob.
What is even happening.
